Sisters, I give you permission to embrace who God made you to be even if it is 100% different than what women have been in your family, church or tradition! As some wise person has said, “God can’t bless who you pretend to be!”
Dr. Liz Rios
Who are you?
I’m a 2nd generation Nuyorican (Puerto Rican from New York) now living in SoFlo (South Florida). I learned early on in life that people will disappoint you but you don’t have to disappoint yourself. I am a mom of two very different boys (one in college and one special needs) and the wife of an amazing man for 29 years. I’ve been in ministry for just as long and have seen the good, bad and ugly sides of it. I made it my business to be real in whatever I was doing, teaching, preaching, hanging with friends or writing.
Did you always dream of being where you are today? If no, then what was your dream?
Where am I today? LOL! But seriously, as a child of a single parent mom in the hood of the Lower East Side streets of Manhattan, I never imagined God would want me, much less use me. Now my dream is to be authentic in all I do, and to educate and empower people.
What moment or conversation changed your life?
When I worked for the Latino Pastoral Action Center I had several Latino doctors (all men) come in for a meeting. I had never seen that before in my life. Afterwards, I had a conversation with my boss about how inspired I was by these men who did what I didn’t know was possible. He then said, “it is possible for you too. Go back to school.” I did and I never stopped! Just finished up doctorate #2 right now, and I think I’ll stop there, LOL.
What lesson learned is guiding you through life?
Don’t Buy the Lie! There are so many lies the devil will throw at us to make us not believe in our potential just because of past mistakes, who our parents are, what side of the tracks we grew up on, what we did or didn’t have, who we knew or didn’t know. Every time I get a thought that is a counter narrative to God’s master narrative for His children, I expel it from my brain!
